Gabriel Pierné: Overture to Ramuntcho and Suite No. 1 from Incidental Music to Ramuntcho
Lille National Orchestra, Darrell Ang

The composer wrote the overture for a staged version of Pierre Loti’s 1897 novel Ramuntcho, a love and adventure story about contraband runners in the Basque province of France.  This is a recent release on the Naxos label.

John Bennet: Weep, O Mine Eyes
Philip Glass: Closing from String Quartet No. 3, “Mishima”
Attacca Quartet

John Bennet, c.1575-c.1615, was an English composer of madrigals. On their new release, Of All Joys, the Attacca Quartet pairs Renaissance compositions with works by modern “minimalist” composers such as Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt.

Luigi Boccherini: Sonata for Harpsichord and Violin in D, Op. 5 no. 4
The Raritan Players

This performance features harpsichordist Rebecca Cypess and violinist Dongmyung Ahn. You can hear an interview with Dr. Cypess which aired on June 20.

Max Bruch: String Quartet No. 2 in E, Op. 10
Nash Ensemble

From the Hyperion liner notes: “With a programme of chamber works drawn from both ends of Bruch’s long composing career, members of The Nash Ensemble once more reveal a neglected side of the composer’s output.”

Rob Kennedy speaks with Dr. Timothy Olsen, Kenan Professor of Organ at the UNC School of the Arts.

Domenico Zipoli: Pastorale
Timothy Olsen, organ
1965 Flentrop organ at Salem College, Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Italian composer Domenico Zipoli (1688–1726) became a Jesuit priest in 1716 and emigrated to South America. He spent most of his life in what is now Argentina and Paraguay teaching music to the indigenous peoples.

J.S. Bach: Overture In The French Style, BWV 831
Andrew von Oeyen, piano

American pianist Andrew von Oyen knows how to make the piano sing, as you will hear in this luminous performance of Bach’s Overture in The French Style.

Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95 “Serioso”
Dover Quartet

From the Cedille’s website: “The Dover’s three-disc set of Beethoven’s “Middle Quartets” includes the three Op. 59 “Razumovsky” Quartets, infused with Russian folk tunes; the graceful “Harp,” Op. 74, named for its plucked string figures; and the intense Op. 95 “Serioso,” a forward-looking experiment that Beethoven originally intended ‘for a small circle of connoisseurs.'”

W.A. Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466
Madrid Soloists Chamber Orchestra, Tigran Shiganyan
Sergei Kvitko, piano

In addition to being a concert pianist, Mr. Kvitko is an acclaimed audio engineer and founder of Blue Griffin Records. He composed his own cadenzas for this performance.
